Briefly, thematic analysis (TA) is a popular method for analysing qualitative data in many disciplines and fields, and can be applied in lots of different ways, to lots of different datasets, to address lots of different research questions! It is one of a cluster of methods that focus on identifying patterned meaning across a dataset. Leading thematic analysis proponents, psychologists Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke distinguish between three main types of thematic analysis: coding reliability approaches (examples include the approaches developed by Richard Boyatzis and Greg Guest and colleagues), code book approaches (these includes approaches like framework analysis, template analysis and matrix analysis) and reflexive approaches. What is thematic analysis?Thematic analysis is a method for identifying, analysing, and reporting patterns (themes) within data. It minimally organises and describes your data set in (rich) detail. However, it also often goes further than this, and interprets various aspects of the research topic (Boyatzis, 1998).

More recently, the writings of Patton (2002), Boyatzis (1998) and, latterly, ourselves (Braun & Clarke, 2006), among others, have provided a foundation, and set of procedures, for . thematic analysis The approach to TA that Braun & Clarke have developed [2] involves a six-phase process for doing analysis. These phases should be considered to be undertaken sequentially with each phase building on the one before. However, analysis should be considered recursive – in other words moving back and forth between each phase.
